As Lead UI Designer, I was responsible for designing the new ZDF streaming platform for big screens. The goal was to create a modern, personalized, and cross-platform user experience - from HbbTV and CTV to apps like Sky or Fire TV.Together with an outstanding design team, we developed a consistent UI and UX concept that delivers a unified user experience despite the very different requirements across devices. In addition to the visual design, I was also responsible for various UX features specifically tailored to big-screen environments.
The result: an intuitive, scalable, and future-proof platform that reflects ZDF’s transformation from a linear broadcaster to a modern streaming brand.
The startpage of the ZDF app features a visually striking interface with large hero sections that are used consistently across the entire platform. These areas provide users with all essential information at a glance - from metadata and streaming options to content details and runtimes.Images and trailers can be played directly within the hero section. The interface is specifically optimized for TV devices and remote controls, offering a clear structure and intuitive navigation.
The Smart Collection serves as the series overview or detail page for films. At its center - just like on the startpage - is the hero section, which presents all essential information. From here, users can start videos with just a few clicks, watch trailers, add content to their watchlist, browse seasons and episodes, or discover additional recommendations.
Even the video teasers are designed to display all relevant information for each episode at a glance.
The search function of the ZDF app was developed specifically for HbbTV - featuring a concept and design that had not existed in this form before. With a completely rethought on-screen keyboard, results can be dynamically and visibly displayed as the user types. After the very first letter, suggestions and top results appear; once three letters are entered, a full results list opens.
The design presents a large amount of content at a glance without distracting interface elements - clear, intuitive, and perfectly optimized for TV use.
We greatly value the professional and consistently collaborative support provided by Qvest throughout this important project. Their outstanding work in UI/UX design for big-screen devices, as well as in the development of the new streaming platform for HbbTV and CTV, was particularly valuable [...].
